Mercantile Rugby 7’s

Oh yeah..It all happened at the CR & FC grounds last Saturday(17th) and Sunday(18th). Most unfortunately our television viewers weren’t able to follow the matches played throughout Saturday because Channel Eye did not broadcast the tournament live, even though they advertised it on TV repeatedly on Saturday and Sunday. What more can ya expect rite? :)

Anyhow Seylan Bank managed to win the Mercantile trophy for the second consecutive year yesterday beating John Keels Group 34-10. Believe it or not Fazil Marija, Amjad Buksh, Dinesh Sanjeewa, Tuan Shamrock & Mohammed Jabbar, all star national players for Sri Lanka played for Seylan Bank giving JKG no chance in winning the cup.

Buksh opened the scorecard for SB and Thajudeen replied immediately with another for JKG. The score was 17-5 for SB @ the end of the first session thanks to two more tries by Shamrock and Kasun De Silva.

Anuradha Dharmatilake touched down for JKG in the second half while Dinesh Sanjeewa touched twice and Shamrock joined in with another for SB giving JKG no chance at all @ the trophy. Final score 34-10. Fazil Marija recieved the Pemraj Pieris Memorial trophy for the man of the match while Tuan Shamrock was awarded with the Mohan Daniel trophy for the most outstanding player of the tournament.

Commercial Bank beat Emjay international lead by Nalakha Weerakkody for the Plate championship 17-12. Nobody would’ve thought that CB would shoot through the strong big line of Emjay but that’s how it ended up @ the end.
